Where To Advertise Your New Website?

One of the biggest problems people often overlook after making a new website, is where to advertise it. It doesn't matter if you have made the most technologically advanced site around, with the nicest graphics available, if no one sees it, it's like building a huge shopping centre in the back of Bourke.

The first piece of advice people may hear is to use Google, Yahoo, MSN or AOL advertise. These are definately a good source to find customers, however with the cost being around $1 per click on your ad with those clicks not necessarily making a sale, it definately doesn't have to be your only form of advertising.

To sign up to Adsense go to: Google Adsense.
To sign up for Yahoo go to: Yahoo Advertising.
To sign up for MSN go to: MSN Advertising.
To sign up for AOL to go: AOL - Platform-a.

To make sure you are already in free listings first of all get a sitemap which help some search engines list your site:
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com
Once you have that, check out your free listings on search engines at:
Google Webmasters
Yahoo Site Explorer
Live Search Webmaster Central

For search engine optimization (SEO) you may first be best to buy a book on the topic as it's a very important topic to understand.
To touch on the topic, make sure you get plenty of backlinks to your site, the more important the sites are that link to your site, the better your page ranks in some of the search engines.

Offline Advertising

These methods of advertising should not be overlooked, they were around before the Internet was here, and some will be here to stay, for example:
Newspapers
TV/Radio
Magazines/Pamphlets
Business Cards/Printed Stationery
Signs, Stickers, Postcards, Signatures on letters etc. you get the picture.

Affiliate Marketing

If you would like to use the Internet, how about doing a banner exchange with similar sites? Or have you used Affiliate Marketing? There is a good list of Affiliate Marketing sites here:
Affiliate Networks.

The good thing about Affiliate Marketing is that you can pay for your ads/banners by the month, regardless of how many clicks you get, you can also find some Affiliate Marketers that allow pay per click (PPC) marketing.

Free Online Groups/Clubs

There are many groups that you can join for free online, they can be a very good source of advertising. You should find a group/club such as at Yahoo/Google groups that is related to your site, add some useful information to the groups and leave a link to your site whenever you write an email or article for the group.

Paid Mail

Using companies that pay people to read their mail is another very good way to advertise your product especially if you are trying to advertise your network marketing company, or a company where you would like people to read more about your product. The customers that read your mail can also give reviews about your website and product, which can help your advertising. One of the best paid mail companies I have used is HTMail.
They have stood the test of time, and have a great referal and affiliate program.
Here is their ad:

If you would like to see what kind of mail they send people, you could sign up to be in their opt in mailing list, where you can get paid to read advertisers mail. Here is the ad to sign up:

Online Article Submissions

There are many sites where you can submit an article for free (some even pay you), so write about an interesting topic (relevant to your site if possible) then include a link back to your site in after your name at the bottom of the article. A good thing about articles is that they can be used by many people on many sites.

Social Networking Sites

There are new social networking sites coming up all the time, and as most people that use the Internet are involved in at least one or more of these sites, such as myspace or facebook, these sites are definately a good place to advertise. Just remember not to spam or your results may be negative.
One way to reach a lot of these sites is to use a free service such as www.socialmarker.com

Viral Marketing

This doesn't sound so good, but it is often the best source of marketing.
This kind of marketing is where you show a product and then people do the marketing for you by sending it to their friends. This is often done by the means of videos. If you can make a video interesting enough people will often send it to others for you.
You have probably seen this done in emails too, however I would proceed with caution before making an email for marketing purposes.

One of the best way to learn how to advertise your site is by reading about it from professional authors, who have been successful themselves:

Blogs

Blogs are widely used for advertising, some large companies such as Rakuten online shopping in Japan, give there members free blogs, so they can mention in the blogs about products Rakuten has on offer, and with their affiliate program, if a member sells a product from the blog, they can get points, which can be used to buy products.

Some people use other freely available blogs such as 'WordPress' to advertise their products. I used one with one of my first sites when I was in Sydney at: www.sydneyfriends.tv/blogs. You can now even put adsense ads on your blog, to make some extra cash. Remember to make sure you are interested in the topic you are talking about, and if it's closely related to what you are trying to sell, you could be on a winner with blogs.

Online Classifieds

Traditionally people used the classifieds section in newspapers to sell their product or service, now there is an increasing number of popular online classifieds, and most of the most popular newspaper classifieds are now online!

One advantage of online classifieds is that they are often free. You also have a wide variety of kinds of classifieds you can use, so you may find a free online classifieds for the category you are selling.

Here are some sites you can advertsie on for free (some conditions may apply on some):
